First Level Social Work Intern

Roycemore School seeks a first-level social work intern for the 2023-2024 school year. Now in its 106th year, Roycemore is a highly regarded, co-educational independent school for students from 3 years old through 12th grade. Located in Evanston, Illinois, on the north side of Chicago, Roycemore is proudly the most diverse private high school in Illinois; The role of the social work intern is to work in collaboration with the full-time social worker to enable students to achieve their fullest potential academically by assisting students to develop coping skills, increase self-esteem, improve interactive skills, and facilitate environmental changes that will enable successful functioning within the learning setting. Please note: This is an unpaid, academic credit internship.

Essential Functions

  • In collaboration with full-time social worker, work with the Head of School and Division Heads on restorative justice and SEL topics to support teachers and students
  • Advise and coach teachers and staff in regard to each child’s individual therapeutic needs, the psychosocial curriculum, and psychosocial clinical best practices; collaborate with other clinicians on students’ teams to determine the best approach for each student
  • Attend student “team meetings” about student needs/ topics of mental health/ developmental transitions
  • Identify and implement age and need-appropriate mental health services including classroom lessons, small group interventions, individual counseling, and behavior coaching
  • Observe students with diverse learning/ emotional/ behavioral needs to help with identifying accommodations and interventions in the classroom
  • Work in coordination with school personnel and parents to develop appropriate programming for students
  • Connect students and their families with outside community and educational resources, as needed
  • Meet weekly with full-time school social worker for supervision and collaboration


Qualifications

Important Note: Roycemore is a private Pre-K-12 institution. Roycemore may not qualify for second-level interns pursuing the School Social Work track. Please connect with your university in regard to qualifications for the PEL.

  • Candidate must be enrolled in a Master’s program from an accredited learning institution and eligible for internship.
  • Previous experience working in school settings desired, especially with adolescents
  • Ability to assess, evaluate, and refer students to appropriate resources and referrals
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, be organized, and be flexible with ever-changing priorities and/ or situations
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality 
  • Demonstrated ability to interface, collaborate and communicate effectively with students, parents, teachers, and administrators 
  • Commitment to the creation and sustainability of an inclusive, equitable learning environment for all students
  • Working knowledge of Windows and/or Macintosh operating systems
  • Experience with Google Workspace (preferred)
  • Able to use basic office equipment


Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Works in a very busy and involved environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines, and a varied and diverse array of contacts
  • May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
  • Be able to occasionally lift up to 20 lbs
  • Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled office environment
  • Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
