Roycemore's Individualized Approach to College Counseling
By Ashley Quire, College Counselor
February marks the start of our Junior Application Course, where I meet with juniors twice a week as a class and once a week individually. Our goal is to have applications thoughtfully planned and drafts well underway before summer break. Over the summer, rising seniors will have access to additional support for supplemental essays and final editing.
However, this is far from the first time students and parents engage with college counseling. Beginning in 7th grade, I meet with families for long-term roadmap conversations, homeroom activities, and school events such as College and Convos for students and College and Cocktails for parents. Throughout the years, students and families explore college expectations and experiences through opportunities like our annual college tours, dozens of small-group college admissions visits, alumni panels, and our yearly College Fair and Workshops.
My background of 16 years in college admissions, non-profit college and career readiness, and internship campus recruiting—combined with being the parent of a high school student at Roycemore, has reinforced that this process is all about baby steps for both students and parents. The goal is never to overwhelm, but to support students and families at every stage with streamlined and detailed resources and advice.
This paired with the intentionally small size of our school, makes the college counseling process a highly personal, often fun, and tailored experience for each family.
