Group Project: Narrative Audio Storytelling

Some of the most powerful storytelling can be crafted through sound. The Narrative Audio Storytelling Group set out for this year’s January Short Term with the goal of producing their own original audio narrative. After listening to samples of pieces of fiction and non-fiction audio storytelling, students in this group project were instructed to create original audio plays, short stories, or pieces of creative nonfiction to tell a story using a combination of narration, sound design, and music.

A goal for this project was for students to understand how rich audio storytelling can be, and how few barriers there are to create something immersive and easy to distribute using technology. Students worked with their staff mentors Mohan Fitzgerald and Sara McGuire to select their topic and to execute their vision. This year's projects ranged from horror audio podcasts, to audio dramas, to single-character narrative stories.

Narrative Audio Storytelling Group participants include:

  • Adam Garcia
  • Justin Hamedi
  • Gael Palacios
  • Sam Rosen
  • Charlie Rozsypalek
  • Eric Sanchez
  • Otto Weber
  • Zaid Hydri

“Skills in audio engineering and with Digital Audio Workstation software are helpful for students who hope to work in broadcasting or music production. Many of them gained confidence in using their own voice over a microphone. Storytelling is always a useful skill.”

“It was really cool to see students come up with these vastly different stories, and their approaches to both the writing and the acting of them. I love seeing their excitement and connection to their pieces and how the feedback from the group could enhance their storytelling.”

Sara McGuire

“I learned how to plan a story, write a script, and use sound to make ideas clear. I got better at speaking with purpose, adding the right sounds, and thinking about how the listeners will feel. I also learned that good audio takes patience, practice, and hard work.”

“Completing this project was very motivational for me because it proved that I could produce great work if I dedicated time to it.”

Sam Rosen

“I got to make a podcast about topics I wanted to instead of topics we were forced to talk about.”

Zaid Hydri

"I was surprised at how much work needs to be put into the editing process and how long it takes to create an interesting and well balanced podcast.”
