Griffin Sferruzza: Writing and Illustrating a Fantasy Book
Griffin Sferruzza spent the first 3 weeks after winter break not in a classroom, but instead at home, dedicating his time and energy to creating a fantasy storybook. His storybook, titled The Road to the Dragon, combines both Griffin’s passion for fantasy stories and painting. The book features 10 short chapters with an illustrated painting to go along with each chapter. Griffin felt that the task of creating and illustrating a book would serve as a fun challenge to take on and would help him improve both his planning and painting skills.
Some obstacles that Griffin had to overcome during his JST project was deciding what moment from each chapter to paint, as well as coming to grips with the reality that the image of the painting in his head would not always be exactly what he wanted it to be. This project allowed Griffin to work on composition and scale, which he has felt was a weakness of his painting.
Griffin’s dedication to improving and taking creative risks embodies the spirit of Roycemore’s January Short Term program. "I'm most proud of finishing all 10 paintings and the chapters, as well as having them work together as one story. Seeing the full project completed felt really amazing," Griffin reflected.
