Mathematics

Mathematics is taught through hands-on activities using manipulatives, construction, games, computers, and with pencil and paper reinforcement to build basic mathematical concepts, problem solving, applications, and computation using The Everyday Mathematics Program as well as teacher supplements. Instruction occurs through whole class grouping, small-group, and on an individual basis. Through differentiation, students are challenged at their own levels of achievement.

This year the students build upon the following mathematical skills:

·Reading and writing numbers, and place value

·Number patterns and calendar

·Odd and even number sense and skip counting

·Addition and Subtraction facts to 18

·Adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers without regrouping

·Reading charts, tables and graphs

·Analyzing word problems

·Basic fractions, estimation, measuring, and geometry

·Time to the nearest hour, ½ hour, ¼ hour

·Identifying and counting coins

·Developing listening skills, class participation, and independent work habits
