Around Roycemore

Fourth-graders held another busy and successful plant and bake sale the Friday before Mother's Day. A wonderful opportunity to integrate math, science and environmental studies, the sale is the result of their year-long efforts. It's so popular that early birds start lining up well before 8 a.m. Fourth-graders sported t-shirts given to them by the Lincoln Park Zoo Adopt-an-Animal program, one of the beneficiaries of their fundraising. Roycemore Receives $2,000 Best Buy Teach Award
The School has received a $2,000 Teach Award from Best Buy Co., Inc. for integrating interactive technology into its curriculum. "Our students use computers for Internet research, interactive software programs, games for learning, slide show presentations, and multimedia projects. Students enjoy these engaging activities and come away with a deep understanding not only of using the computer, but also of the subject area.  This grant will help us to expand the development of similar enriching technology projects to the rest of the school," says Roycemore's Tech Coordinator Beth Lord. "We are very excited to receive this recognition."

Over the past four years, nearly 5,000 schools nationwide have received $14 million in Best Buy Teach Awards.

Roycemore Receives Distinction for Smallest Class Sizes
Roycemore School was singled out by Chicago Magazine for the distinction of having the smallest class sizes in the region. The magazine, in its December 2007 edition, cited Roycemore's average of 9.7 students per class as the lowest among private high schools in the Chicago area.

The distinction, an indicator of personalized attention to students, came in
a survey of 56 institutions.``This reflects Roycemore's commitment to inspiring excellence and celebrating individuality,'' said Joseph Becker, Roycemore's headmaster. ``Our school provides a nurturing environment at the Junior Kindergarten and Lower School levels, as well as individual attention for middle and high school students,'' Becker said.

At Roycemore, students are guaranteed the opportunity to play on sports
teams, perform in school plays and take part in other extracurricular activities that are limited to a select few at larger high schools, Becker said.

``The finding validates our philosophy of making Roycemore the small school of choice in the region,'' he said.
