Early Childhood Education at Roycemore

Roycemore's small student/teacher ratio provides many opportunities for each child to receive individual attention from the teachers. The Early Childhood Programs promote the development of the whole child by providing a safe, nurturing environment in which each child can grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically. Age-appropriate academic skills and concepts are presented to children in a fun, natural, meaningful way.

Children in the classroom come from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds. The school encourages understanding and acceptance of all cultures. Junior Kindergarten students must be 3 years old by September 1 and be toilet trained. Kindergarten students must be 5 years old by September 1.

Our Philosophy
We believe that children learn best by being actively involved in their own learning through a variety of hands-on activities. These activities are meaningful to the children, appropriate for each child's developmental level and are designed to allow each child to progress at his or her own pace.

The Programs
Most Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten students attend Roycemore for a full day. Junior Kindergarten is a 5-day-a-week program from 8:25 to 11:30 a.m. Kindergarten runs from 8:25 to 12:00 noon. To accommodate the needs of busy families, children may arrive for the Extended Day Program (EDP) as early as 7:30 a.m. EDP is also available after school until 3:00 or 6:00 p.m., for an additional fee, which includes an afternoon snack and stimulating enrichment and recreational activities.

Taking into account a variety of learning styles, pre-reading, reading and early math skills are integrated into a number of different activities throughout the day in large and small group settings within the classroom. In addition, each child's social and emotional needs are addressed throughout the day in a variety of ways during both structured and unstructured classroom activities. In the classroom and on the playground, the children have daily opportunities for music, movement, physical activity, and art, as well as several weekly sessions with specialized teachers for music, art, physical education, and French language exposure in Kindergarten.

The Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes are led by a certified Early Childhood Education teacher and are supported by one or two assistants with early childhood backgrounds, depending on enrollment.
